This speech isn’t really about Warren Zevon. You don’t even have to be a great musician to be a great artist. You don’t even have to like music all that much. You don’t have to love Warren Zevon’s music to respect his parting words. Warren Zevon didn’t flinch and said he’d learned to enjoy every sandwich. During the hour he asked his friend what he’d learned since his terminal diagnosis. Letterman is not sentimental, but he’s sincere. Zevon’s friend David Letterman invited him to be his only guest, any night, one last time. He’d sung better and stronger before, but he said his farewell well in the end.

His musician friends – Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Ry Cooder, Tom Petty and the better half of the Eagles – rushed to join him in the studio to be his backup band and record his last goodbye to family and fans – the only way he knew how to say farewell.
